Product Features
● Three-Wire Construction: The basket is formed from three flat, flexible wires that are joined at the base (distal end) and the handle (proximal end).
● Material: Typically made of nitinol. Nitinol is prized for its superelasticity and shape memory, meaning the basket can be constrained into a straight, narrow catheter, and upon deployment, it will return to its pre-formed basket shape without deformation.
● Radiopaque Markers: The tips of the basket wires and sometimes the sheath are radiopaque, making them visible under fluoroscopy (X-ray) to guide the surgeon.
● Handle Mechanism: An ergonomic handle allows the surgeon to precisely control the basket.
Application scenarios
● Ureteral Stones: The most common application, for stones located in the mid and distal ureter.
● Small Renal Stones: For stones located within the kidney that are accessible and small enough to be safely removed.
● Following Lithotripsy: To retrieve fragments of a larger stone after it has been broken up with a laser or other energy source.
Instruction for use
● Access and Visualization: A thin, flexible ureteroscope is passed through the urethra and bladder into the ureter until the stone is visualized.
● Basket Insertion: The closed basket, contained within its sheath, is advanced through the working channel of the ureteroscope.
● Deployment: The basket is advanced beyond the stone. The surgeon then retracts the outer sheath, allowing the basket to open fully in the ureter.
● Engagement: The basket is manipulated (often by gently rotating it) to ensnare the stone within its wires.
● Capture and Retrieval: Once the stone is captured, the sheath is advanced, partially closing the basket around the stone. The entire unit (scope, basket, and stone) is then withdrawn from the body.
